A city in Sonoma County, CA, Cloverdale is both the westernmost and the northernmost city in the San Francisco Bay Area. It began as an early stagecoach stop known as Markleville in 1856. The town was laid out in 1859, but the town was finally incorporated when the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad arrived in 1872. By 1878, the railroad service provided three daily trains between Cloverdale and Ferries of San Francisco Bay. The area suffered severe economic hardship with multiple closures between 1988 and 1994, ending with Highway 101 being rerouted around the town with a bypass.

Recently, over 250 acres were pledged by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District to be used as a park and open-space preserve, leading to the area having more area for parks and other natural areas for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.
